Today is the 1st day of the Community Torch Relay.
For 2 weeks before half term we worked with 30 schools at Derby Silk Mill Museum, making the basic torch structure and working on ideas .......then they went away and put the finishing touches to their own unique torch.
We haven't seen the results until now
They are FABULOUS
Look at Derwent Community School's torch, we love the figures around the bottom and wonderful flames on the top.
Well done!!!

Leon Baptiste @ a Spiral Arts workshop :)
6 of their feeder schools attending.
Working in groups of 3 they had 1hr and 40 minutes to make a torch and I think you will agree looking at the photos below they all did a very good job too :)
Also at some of the workshops we had sporting champions dropping in to chat to the children.
We managed to photograph Leon Baptiste who had brought his Gold Medal - won in the 200metres at the 2010 Commonwealth games in Delhi. He spent a long time chatting to all the children and even let some of them try the medal on which was really amazing.
Thanks Leon I think we all voted you a real champion!!

Jub-Olympic Bunting
Over the last couple of weeks we have had a great time working with the young people from the Cantelupe Youth Club in Ilkeston. We showed them how to make bunting which they can use for their Diamond Jubilee or Olympic celebrations, or in fact any other parties or events they have.
First of all they painted some fabric, then cut it up and sewed it into strips of bunting. Using the sewing machines became a very sociable event with one person operating the foot pedal while the other person fed the fabric through the machine.

Find Out the FACS
Last week we were one of 9 micro provider art organisations who put on an event at Derby Dance Centre helping promote art activities for carers and cared for people who are shortly going to be responsible for managing their own wellbeing budget.
It sounds a huge and somewhat daunting task as people don't necessarily know what's out there and available to them.
For our part we ran a simple stencilling workshop and participants got to take away a length of bunting made out of their stencilled piece of work.

International Women's Day 2012
We had a stand again at the International Women's Day. This year it was held at the Assembly Rooms, Derby in the Darwin Suite, and this year we were there on behalf of the CO OP who are supporting this campaign.
With help from a lot of women, some children and yes, a few men..... we made a collage of the campaign poster.
We even had some help from a group of young people from the Hoverla Ukrainian Dance Ensemble.
